Crocodylinae, all of whose members are considered true crocodiles, is classified as a biological subfamily. Large, old males are at the top of this hierarchy and have primary access to food and the best basking spots. They are carnivorous animals, feeding mostly on vertebrates such as fish, reptiles, birds and mammals, and sometimes on invertebrates such as molluscs and crustaceans, depending on species and age. They are quite agile predators and wait for the opportunity for a prey item to come well within attack range. The gharial having a narrow snout is easier to distinguish, while morphological differences are more difficult to spot in crocodiles and alligators. There is a strict hierarchy, which is determined by size. As it matures, the Nile crocodiles becomes darker and the cross-bands fade, especially those on the upper-body. Most morphological attributes of Nile crocodiles are typical of crocodilians as a whole. Although they appear to be similar to the untrained eye, crocodiles, alligators and the gharial belong to separate biological families. The use of -y- in the scientific name Crocodylus (and forms derived from it) is a corruption introduced by Laurenti (1768). However, they have many similarities in these areas as well. The term is sometimes used even more loosely to include all extant members of the order Crocodilia, which includes Tomistoma, the alligators and caimans (family Alligatoridae ), the gharials (family Gavialidae ), and all other living and fossil Crocodylomorpha. The Nile crocodile is an opportunistic apex predator and a very aggressive species of crocodile that is capable of taking almost any animal within its range. All crocodiles are semiaquatic and tend to congregate in freshwater habitats such as rivers, lakes, wetlands and sometimes in brackish water and saltwater.
